Primarily designed to record the starting and quitting time of employees, or the hours that people worked, time clocks have proven the importance of their function to both large and small business establishments.
The history of time clocks dates back to the industrial revolution in western countries, when the needs for recording the working hours of employees arise. New York jeweller Willard Bundy invented the first time clock in 1888; and in 1889, the mass production of the clock was initiated by the Bundy Manufacturing Co., which was later consolidated into the International Time Recording Co. (ITR) along with two other time equipment businesses.
Today, there are different types and designs of time clocks sold in the market. They range from manual time clocks to automated timekeeping technology. Examples of these manual timekeeping devices are employee punch clocks and fingerprint clocks. The latter are a popular type of biometric time clocks that store binary data representing a fingerprint’s ridges and swirls.
Though manual time clocks are famous among many companies worldwide, large, multinational companies prefer the automated type for it is capable of streamlining employee timekeeping and payroll processes. There is currently a number of time clock software offered in the market. Among them are the Time-Windows Internet time clock from Metron Time Clock Co., the Attendance Rx Network from Acroprint Time Recorder Co., and the LionClock⢠punch clock software.
